A guide for Princeton locavores…

One Table Café is Opening for Lunch, Fabulous as Ever

When it opened in January, 2011, One Table Café in Princeton held both promise and uncertainty. The goal was simple:  Bring people from different walks of life together for a high caliber dining experience in a warm, inviting venue and where cost is not a barrier.  The chosen spot is a community hall at Trinity Church.  A year later, and wildly successful, it is about to open for lunch.

Before it debuted,  Trinity’s Rector, Rev. Paul James III, said “the act of sharing bread is such a fundamental yet often spiritual activity that we decided it could be the perfect vehicle to reach out to and connect with Princeton’s entire community.”

Has it ever.  “The big surprise was the immediate success of a concept that many people doubted would work, says Donald Mann, one of the co-chairs.  “Generous donations of high-quality food by the best restaurants in town and a pay what you can policy helped make this a ‘wow’ experience for people of many demographic groups.”  At last Friday’s dinner, typically,  the good feelings were almost tangible.  “If an Episcopalian minister from Kentucky can dance, ” said a clergyman who will go unnamed, “everyone can dance.”

Last Friday’s food was donated by Mediterra Restaurant, and prepared by Terra Momo Restaurant Group’s Chefs Chris Albrecht and Terry Strong. Its newly renamed Terra Momo Bread Company (formerly Witherspoon Bread Company) provided all the baked goods.

One Table Café has served over 1200 meals at its monthly* events.

Starting next week,  One Table Café will serve lunch from 12 noon – 1 p.m. three days a week*.  Initial sponsor for the lunch service is the Terra Momo restaurant Group

*Schedule:  One Table Café generally serves dinner on the 3rd Friday of every month.  Lunch will be served Monday, Wednesday, and Friday but there are seasonal and holiday exceptions, so check their schedule.

The menu was wholesome and delicious:  the first course:  a wheatberry salad, with treviso, arugula, dried cranberries, candied walnuts, ricotta salata and chardonnay vinaigrette.

Main course: paella with calasparra rice, saffron, chorizo sausage, chicken, clams, mussels, shrimp and calamari. And for dessert apple Tarte tatin with cinnamon apple chips, ice cream and candied thyme (and we got a recipe!)
